New Survey by Be Human Reveals Hidden Financial Strain of Chronic Illness in Luxembourg

A new survey by Be Human has revealed that many people living with chronic illnesses face significant financial challenges despite Luxembourg's comprehensive healthcare system. The findings suggest that the real cost of chronic illness extends beyond medical treatment, affecting financial security, employment, and quality of life.

Among 100 people surveyed in Luxembourg, here are just some of the results:

Many respondents reported struggling with upfront healthcare costs while waiting for reimbursement. Others highlighted difficulties accessing complementary insurance due to exclusions for pre-existing conditions, high premiums, or rejected applications.

The survey also found that managing a chronic illness can affect employment. Around 30% percent of respondents attend six or more medical appointments per month, with many reporting challenges balancing healthcare needs and work responsibilities.

“It’s a vicious circle: lose a job due to illness, unable to find a job due to illness, unable to pay for treatment due to lack of means. There should be a pathway to full treatment without the stress of wondering how you’re going to pay for it.” Said one respondent.

Be Human is calling for greater recognition of the lived realities of chronic illness, including improved reimbursement procedures, improved access to complementary insurance, better coverage of medically recommended treatments, and increased workplace flexibility. The full report, The Cost of Chronic Illness in Luxembourg, is available here.
